Greetings parents! Finally...I think I have our classroom blog up and running! I will be updating this blog every other week with classroom news and updates on our learning! I will email reminders when it is updated---please feel free to share this blog with your family members who may be out of the area so that they can stay "in the loop."
Today marks our 14th day of Kindergarten, and I am already amazed at how the students have progressed both academically and socially. This is a hard working bunch of students and they are all SO eager to learn! I know this is going to be an AWESOME year!
We have started both Literacy Stations and Math Stations, and students are trying hard to become "independent" workers during this time. Soon, I will be differentiating the work at these stations based on your child's needs---I believe in taking each child where he/she is and moving them forward!
Here is a quick rundown of what we've been covering in class the past few weeks!

Here is a quick rundown of what we've been covering in class the past few weeks!
ELA
Last week we read the story "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and discussed the plot of the story, specifically the beginning/middle/end. Students helped to dictate a retelling of the story, and then used pictures to tell the beginning/middle/end of the story. This week we read the story "The Little School Bus" and focused on CHARACTERS in the story. Ask your child if he/she can name all 7 characters from the book! We have added 3 words to our Word Wall "I, am, a" and will be adding "can, red, blue" next week. We have also practiced daily, the alphabet letters and sounds--a copy of these letters and pictures is located in your child's white folder. She if he/she can recite the whole chant for you! We have also started writing in our journals---students are learning that authors can tell stories with pictures and words, and that we are ALL authors, and have a story to tell!
MATH
The past two weeks in math we have focused on numbers from 0-5. While most students came to Kindergarten with a strong foundation of numbers to 5, it was important to spend time building models to represent each number and become familiar with using a 5 frame. This will help your child's number sense as we start working with larger numbers and as we begin addition and subtraction later in the year. On Wednesday we played a game where we were able to record many different combinations of five. See if your child can tell you some ways to make 5 (1 and 4, 2 and 3, etc.)
SOCIAL STUDIES
The past two weeks we discussed how we are alike and different and we created pages for an "All About Me" projects. Students were excited to see that they had many similarities with their friends, but also many differences. Today we finished our All About Me projects and they are now proudly on display in our classroom! Each project is as unique as each student!
IMPORTANT NEWS
Reminder that homework will not begin until October. Right now, if you are looking for things to practice at home, please work on having your child write his/her first name, numbers to 5, and 1:1 counting. A great way to practice counting is by playing a board game with your child...Trouble, Sorry, etc are all excellent counting games!
Scholastic Book Fair is next week! If you would like your child to purchase books, please label his/her money accordingly and place in his/her folder. You may also stop by the school when the book fair is open, and check your child out of class with you to go shopping. The Book Fair will have a Family Night next Thursday evening after school!
FREEDOM WALK
We had a great turn out for our annual Freedom Walk. I did not get to take as many pictures as I wanted to...but here are a few for you to enjoy!!
