I knew it had been a long time since I updated the blog, but when I logged on to BLOGGER to begin an update today, I must admit I was quite EMBARRASSED as to HOW LONG it has been since I have updated!
Please accept my apologies...With the start of the new year, I will try to do better about updating the classroom blog with classroom happenings, important events, and most importantly, pictures!
We have gotten off to a running start since the holiday break and the students have been eager to learn and work! Hopefully the snow will stay away from here on out, so that we can really get back into our classroom routine.
Next week marks the END of the SECOND grading period---which means that we will be officially HALFWAY through Kindergarten. As we approach the second half of the school year, we will continue to have high expectations for all students, and will encourage them to stretch their thinking as we challenge them daily. Please remember to read nightly with your child as research shows this is the MOST important thing you can do with your child at this age to help him/her with reading. Next week I will be providing a list of all of the sight words your child has been introduced to so that you can continue to go over those words with him/her at home.
In Math this week we began a new unit on TEEN NUMBERS. While many children recognize the numerals 11-19, most children do not have a concrete understanding of what teen numbers are. We talk about teen numbers as "Ten and some more" (ex: 13 is 10 and 3 more). By doing this, students will have an easier time in 1st and 2nd grade as they begin to "use 10" to solve 2 digit addition and subtraction problems. In addition to learning about teen numbers, your child should now be fluent in number pairs up to 5. You can play a simple game to help your child become more fluent in number pairs. Decide on a focus number (1, 2 3, 4 or 5) Take out that many pieces of candy (or cereal) Have your child hide his/her eyes and hide some of the candies under a bowl. See if your child can tell you how many pieces of candy are hidden based on the number out of the bowl that he/she can see!
We also started a new Science Unit this week--- We will be learning all about how the Sun affects the Earth over the course of the next few weeks. Expect your child to come home and tell you some interesting facts each day that he/she has learned!
Here are some pictures from November and December...again, I apologize for the long lapse in time!!

In November and December students learned about Force and Motion. Students worked in teams to create ramps and experimented with ways that they could make their plastic ball travel further. Students discovered that the higher the ramp, the further the ball would travel. Students also learned about collisions and were challenged to create a ramp that would roll a ball that could knock down several pieces of wood.
On the last day of school in December, students wore pajamas to school, listened to the book "The Polar Express" and then compared the book to the movie version. Students wrapped up this fun day with some yummy holiday treats!!
