Worms Worms Worms!

With the adoption of our new CCRS Science Standards and new curriculum, we have been fortunate enough to get some "hands on" items for our recent unit titled "Animals, Plants, and Their Environments."  Several weeks ago we received Goldfish, Guppies, Snails, and Elodea, and have created a habitat in our classroom for our "new friends." Students have observed these animals, learned about their structure, and studied what they need to survive. This week, we received Red Worms and Earthworms. After reading and finding out many interesting facts about worms (did you know an Earthworm has FIVE hearts?) students had a chance to explore both Earthworms and Red Worms. Students were excited to see these animals up close and personal, and it was wonderful hearing the students engage in such scientific vocabulary as they examined the worms---ask you child about the "segments" of the worm or the "clitellum" and see if they can explain to you what t...

3-D Shape Castles

Thanks to everyone that sent in items for our 3D Shape Castles!  We had quite a variety of cylinders, spheres, cones, cubes, and prisms to choose from! Students worked in pairs to create their castles. While working, students used their knowledge of shape attributes to build their castles.   This was a great culminating activity on our study of Solid Shapes, and the students not only had fun, but they learned a lot as well!! These castles are proudly on display in our hallway, if you have a chance, stop by to see!!

We are 100 Days Smarter!

What a FUN 100th day of school celebration we had. The students have been eagerly counting to 100 days since August, and could not WAIT until we got to this special day. We started the day with a special 100 Day Snack...yum yum yum! After that, students created special 100th day hats to wear. Each hat had 10 strips of paper and each strip of paper had 10 designs on it...to make 100 designs! Then students shared their 100 day collections...each student was asked to bring in a collection from home of 100 items. It was interesting to see how many different collections we had!  Mrs. Allnutt also brought a collection of 100 Hershey kisses...but she tripped before she got to the room and they landed everywhere! The students worked hard to hunt around the room for the 100 Hershey kisses and used a 100's chart to keep track of their progress! Later in the morning students used 100 Fruit Loops to make a necklace. The afternoon was spent reading many differ...

January Updates!

I knew it had been a long time since I updated the blog, but when I logged on to BLOGGER to begin an update today, I must admit I was quite EMBARRASSED as to HOW LONG it has been since I have updated! Please accept my apologies...With the start of the new year, I will try to do better about updating the classroom blog with classroom happenings, important events, and most importantly, pictures! We have gotten off to a running start since the holiday break and the students have been eager to learn and work!  Hopefully the snow will stay away from here on out, so that we can really get back into our classroom routine.   Next week marks the END of the SECOND grading period---which means that we will be officially HALFWAY through Kindergarten. As we approach the second half of the school year, we will continue to have high expectations for all students, and will encourage them to stretch their thinking as we challenge them daily. Please remember to read nightly with ...

October Photos

I have been having a difficult time with "blogger" (the website I use to blog) lately, and will try one last time to get these pictures posted! Enjoy!  Students listened to the story "Spookley the Square Pumpkin" in October. After listening to the story, and listing words to describe the main character of the book, students used graham crackers and frosting to make their own "edible Spookley." Students also listened to the story "Pete the Cat and the Five Little Pumpkins." After listening to the story, students were given popsicle sticks and clothespins, and were presented with the challenge of building a fence for 5 little pumpkins to rest on using only those two materials. The students worked in pairs to complete this task. It was interesting to watch the students create and test their designs---I think we have some future engineers in the class!!
